Hatakami ~ kozo and mitsumata fibres

Hatakami praktrika (natural) paper is handmade by a family-run business in Nepal. It is made with a 50-50 mixture of kozo (mulberry) and mitsumata (thyme olive), thereby gaining the benefits of both materials ~ strength and softness. We are able to import it direct from the makers ~ which enables them to avoid the high dealership and warehousing prices that would otherwise result.

The paper is acid free and not as opaque as office papers. It has a 'natural' colour and smooth surface. Although its weight is of the order 70gsm this is a different measure from the European papers. Its behaviour and feel equates, in our opinion, to a 100gsm paper.

It is similar in many ways to lokta (daphne) in that it is made in Nepal and looks and handles in much the same way. The blend of fibres is from different plants ~ and contains no grassy fibres as do some papers ~ which are regarded as inferior.

The edges of the full size sheets are deckled. Cut edges can be given a fluffy appearance if attacked with a soft wire brush ~ decoratively useful for some purposes such as the tail end of a bookmark.
